TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SENSORS (TPMS)

TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SENSORS (TPMS)

What is TPMS?

The TPMS low tire pressure indicator is a yellow symbol on the dashboard panel in the design of a tire with an exclamation point. Not every TPMS works the same way, there are two types of TPMS, direct and indirect TPMS.

Indirect TPMS:

Indirect TPMS monitoring relies on the wheel speed sensors that the anti-lock brake system (ABS) uses. These sensors measure the revolution each wheel to compare with each other and to other data such as speed. Indirect TPMS does not measure tire pressure. If all your tires were equally low the car would have a harder time telling that you have a low tire if any. When one tire has much lower tire pressure than the rest of the tires, the car is more likely to trigger the TPMS warning light.

Direct TPMS:

Direct TPMS monitoring uses sensors within each wheel and tire that will display individual tire pressure readings on the dashboard. Every TPMS sensor has a unique serial number, the vehicle uses the serial number to distinguish between itself, other vehicles, and pressure readings for each individual tire.
